Recently, I was watching Knowledge Channel. The broadcast was about 100 greatest biological inventions and among them about the first discovery of bacteria.
Thus, the first bacteria were observed by Anton van Leeuwenhoek in 1674. Of course using a microscope that is obvious. But, it actually was a plate with a small hall and a single-lens in it. A small pin for specimens completed the picture. With this so called "microscope" he was able to see not only infusorians but using a trick with a light and shadow - the bacteria.
Here is the picture of Anton van Leeuwenhoek - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bacteria - in his left hand is his famous microscope. |
